The Devil
Keywords: Addiction, Bondage, stuck, excess, materialism, enslavement, trapped
Yes/No: No
Upright: You may be struggling with some sort of addiction. It could be one of the more serious ones like drugs, alcohol, or gambling that can totally mess up your life, or it could be something smaller like a work addiction. Anything that has control over your mind can be bad for you. If you find yourself needing just one more before you can move on, or needing that fix to feel like yourself, then you have basically given up your power to it and it is now controlling you. You may find yourself blaming the addiction, calling it a disease, or saying it’s the devil’s hold on you, but really this is something that you can get out of if you choose. Do you see how that chain is loosely around your neck? All you have to do is find the courage to slip it off and walk away. In this card, the woman’s tail is of grapes suggesting she is addicted to wine, and the man’s tail is fire suggesting his addiction is an unchecked sexual appetite. The couple is believed to be the same couple as the lovers’ card, which means they were thrown out of the Garden of Eden and now are in the depths of hell. The Devil in this card has a naval, which means that he would have been born, implementing that the Devil is just a man-made fictional being meant to represent that darkness is within us all.
Reversed: Free at last! You have been fighting your inner demons and working on bettering yourself and it is finally paying off. You are now free of the addictions that have ruled your life and now that you are happier and healthier you wonder how you ever let those things have such a hold on you. The good thing is that you have seen the darkness that exists, and you were strong enough to pull yourself out and go towards the light, and you now feel rewarded and victorious and are ready to really live.
